Earlier listings

Archduke Ferdinand II Tyrolean single thalers have been catalogued in several occasions in various details. Davenport [1] lists 12 variants; in the catalogue by Voglhuber [2] 26 variants are presented. The basic monograph on the Tyrolean coin manufacturing by Moser and Tursky [3] describes 30 types of Archduke Ferdinand thalers from Hall. A Hungarian numismatist, Artur Pohl, published a short monograph on Tyrolean thalers [4], where 27 types of Archduke Ferdinand II thalers are described and displayed, and a total number of 206 variants are mentioned.

Heinz Tursky has conducted an extensive and exhaustive research on the variants of the minting cylinders used for producing the Archduke Ferdinand Tyrolean thalers. In a series of publications [5 through 9] Tursky presents all available obverse and reverse variants and combinations in a systematic manner. Tursky lists altogether 62 obverse and 53 reverse die versions and 416 thaler variants minted by them. This monograph is the most comprehensive one ever published in the subject and is a perfect reference for further research, yet it does not present an identification method suitable for systematization or collection purposes.

The catalogue presented here is meant to provide an easy to use complete and concise method for the identification of the thalers in question. It includes the descriptions and images of altogether 225 versions in 61 main groups. During the examination of the available pieces, altogether 439 variants have been identified via the process described under the entry Identification / Method of identification.

Correspondence among identifications by earlier works and by the present catalogue are shown under the entry Cross References.
